Group Therapy & Support

Transformative Group Therapy in Davidson, NC

Living with anxiety, depression, relationship struggles, or the complexities of a neurodivergent mind can often feel incredibly isolating. When you are navigating heavy emotions or life transitions, it is easy to believe that you are the only one feeling this way. You might spend your days masking your true self, constantly managing your stress alone, and wishing for a community that truly understands.

At Wildflower Psychotherapy & Assessment, we believe that profound healing happens in connection. Our group therapy sessions offer a deeply safe, validating, and nurturing environment where you can finally set down your heavy armor. Led by experienced, compassionate clinicians, our groups provide a space to explore your emotions, learn valuable coping skills, and build meaningful relationships with others on similar journeys.

The Unique Power of Healing in Community

While individual therapy is excellent for deep, personal introspection, group therapy offers a dynamic that cannot be replicated in a one-on-one setting. There is a specific kind of magic in sitting in a room (or a virtual space) and hearing someone else articulate the exact struggle you thought you were battling alone.

Group therapy provides natural, organic validation. It acts as a microcosm of the real world—a safe laboratory where you can practice new ways of communicating, setting boundaries, and relating to others in real-time, all while supported by a professional therapist.

What We Focus On in Group Therapy

To meet the diverse needs of our adult clients, Wildflower curates a rotating selection of therapy groups throughout the year. Our sessions are designed to address a variety of human experiences, including:

A Safe, Non-Judgmental Space to Grow

Whether you are neurotypical or neurodivergent, we intentionally design our groups to be low-pressure, trauma-informed, and highly adaptable. We prioritize creating an atmosphere where every participant feels comfortable expressing themselves honestly.

No "Wrong" Way to Participate

In our space, you are welcome exactly as you are. If you need to participate quietly, use a fidget tool, or take a moment to regulate your nervous system, you are encouraged to do so.

Shared Lived Experience

Our sessions provide a space for individuals to share their struggles, receive profound empathy, and gain fresh, actionable insights from the perspectives of others.

Building a Support Network

Friendships and connections forged in our groups often become profound sources of ongoing support. Group therapy helps you build a chosen community that genuinely gets it.

A Culture of Confidentiality

Vulnerability requires deep trust. We establish strict, clear group guidelines around privacy, boundaries, and mutual respect, ensuring that what is shared in the room always stays in the room.

Group Therapy vs. Individual Therapy:
Which is Right for You?

When seeking mental health support, many people wonder whether they should choose individual therapy or join a therapy group. While both are highly effective, they serve different primary functions. Understanding these differences can help you make the best decision for your unique journey.

Individual Therapy is highly focused and deeply introspective. It is an ideal setting if you need to process severe trauma, work through a very specific, private life event, or if you require the undivided attention of a clinician to safely regulate intense emotions. It is a space dedicated entirely to your internal landscape.

Group Therapy, on the other hand, is uniquely designed for interpersonal healing. The primary benefit of a group is the realization that you are not alone. It offers several distinct advantages:

  • The Power of Mirroring: Hearing another group member articulate a feeling you have never been able to put into words is profoundly validating.

  • Real-Time Social Practice: A group is a safe “laboratory.” If you struggle with boundary-setting, people-pleasing, or social anxiety, a group allows you to practice new behaviors in real-time with people who are committed to the same growth.

  • Cost-Effectiveness: Because the clinician’s time is shared among several participants, group therapy is often a more accessible, budget-friendly way to receive consistent, high-quality mental health care.

For many of our clients, the most transformative results come from combining both—using individual sessions for deep processing and group sessions for community support and behavioral practice.

Frequently Asked Questions About Group Therapy

We run various groups throughout the year to accommodate different geographic and sensory needs. We offer both in-person groups at our Davidson, NC office, and secure, virtual telehealth groups available to residents of North Carolina, Missouri, and Florida.

Absolutely not. You are completely in control of what you share and when you share it. There is never any pressure to speak before you are ready. Many clients find immense healing simply by listening and realizing they are not alone.

We curate our groups very carefully. Before joining, you will have a brief consultation with the group facilitator. This ensures that your goals align with the group’s focus and that we place you in a cohort where you will feel the most supported and comfortable.

This depends entirely on your personal needs! For some, a support group is the perfect amount of weekly maintenance and community. For others, group therapy serves as a powerful supplement to their ongoing one-on-one psychotherapy. We can help you determine the best fit during your consultation.

It might seem counterintuitive, but group therapy is actually one of the most effective, evidence-based treatments for social anxiety! While the first few sessions will likely feel intimidating, the group acts as a safe, controlled environment where you can slowly challenge those anxious thoughts. You are surrounded by a compassionate therapist and peers who are also working on their struggles. You are never forced to speak or perform; you can take it at a pace that feels safe for your nervous system.

Wildflower Psychotherapy & Assessment operates as an out-of-network provider. This allows us to keep our groups small, focused, and highly tailored to our clients’ needs without insurance companies dictating the terms. However, many insurance plans do offer out-of-network benefits for group psychotherapy (CPT Code 90853). We are happy to provide you with a detailed “Superbill” that you can submit to your insurance provider for potential reimbursement. We recommend calling your insurance company prior to joining a group to verify your specific out-of-network benefits.
